Oct. 21st, 2004 11:43 amI have a confession.
I really don't find Kath and Kim that funny.
Mildly amusing, yeah, but not really funny.
I think it's the accents. I live in Melbourne. I've lived here for over a decade. I've never heard anyone talking with the accents that they use, or the Brighton women either come to that.
Maybe I just don't hear them (I am in the northern rather than southern suburbs after all - but we have bogans here too).
There's also minor niggles. Obviously none of the scriptwriters play netball or else some of the really quite basic stuff they got wrong wouldn't be there. There's no way Sharon would be playing Centre, incidentally. GS, GK or wings yeah, GA, GD or C unlikely.
They could actually film "Fountain Gate" at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre rather than Southland Shopping Centre (yeah I know, I'm sad enough to recognise both).
At least part of my personal backlash against this show comes from the amount of media hype though. I know it's the next Great White Hope of Australian Television, but really I don't need thirty thousand articles on it, or interviews with the actors in character in various magazines and especially not them singing at the Grand Final. I mean, seriously here... sheesh.
It's like a whole group of journalists have decided it's the best thing since sliced bread and because they love it everyone else must too. Having said that, I did like the comment a couple of thousand articles ago:
"...and they talk about Fountain Gate like it's a real place!"
To which a letter writer made the obvious response:
"It is a real place and if you ever made it out of the latte belt you might know that..."
Ah Melbourne. No class divisions here.
