And the answers
Dec. 27th, 2004 12:24 pmTo the song lyric quiz.
If you still want to have a guess (OK, I'm grasping at straws here!) the clues are here.
Answers are here:
1. He lived with his mother and the Passion of Christ.
Meet James Ensor, by TMBG. One of the best lines out there, and one of the songs I sing in the car when the radio's doing strange things.
2. If we'd go again/all the way from the start
Still Loving You, by The Scorpions. This is one from Dean's collection, but it intrigues me because the lyrics are English but obviously written by someone for whom English isn't a first language. They're 'right' but sort of not, if that makes sense. We've spent a bit of time on long car journeys trying to work out how you would actually say the chorus in 'normal' English: very difficult to do and make it fit the song, incidentally! And it's a great 80s Hair Ballad.
3. Is it any wonder the streets are dark?/Is it any wonder we fall apart?
Rain, by Dragon. One of the best songs to sing in the car while it's pouring. GoldFM agrees with me, I think I've had that song played about 10 times while sitting in a downpour... :-)
4. I saw him in convulsive throes/I said "I'll have one of those!"
(He'll never be an) Ol' Man River, by TISM. Heh, I love this song.
5. We were full of beans/but we were dying like flies
Holy Grail, by Hunters and Collectors. Dean doesn't like this song because he reckons they ripped off the chorus from More than a Feeling by Boston. I love this song, not least cos I know all the words and can sing along.
6. You wake up and you put on your handcuffs
How can people be so wrong by Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra. Great opening line. The full opening verse goes:
You wake up and you put on your handcuffs
you call the police and you turn yourself in.
Cos you've been living like an individual
In a guilty palace of sin.
Love it. Very obscure, granted. Check it out if you come across it.
7. The chills that you spill/up my back
Groove is in the Heart, by Deee-lite. Very much from my nightclubbing back when I was...um, younger. ;-)
8. Am I ever going to see your face again?
Am I ever gonna see your face again?, by The Angels. And ta for adding the extra bit,
dmw - along with Livin' next door to Alice it's one of those songs that I mentally insert lyrics for. (And yeah, that one was a gimme!)
9. Comin' from behind with the lights down low
Backdoor Lover, by DeJour. DeJour is love. DeJour is friendship. DeJour is crash positions! I love that movie.
10. I can't stand to fly
Superman, Five for Fighting. Surprisingly, this one came into my head from glancing at the Bandits soundtrack for inspiration. And after the NAB robbery, that movie has gained a whole new relevance... ;-)
11. I want to hurt you just to hear you/screaming my name
Poison, by Alice Cooper. B&D film clip, probably not as shocking now as it appears to have been when first released. I certainly didn't find it shocking.. maybe I'm older and more shopworn or something. ;-)
12. The things we won't do for love
For my Lover, by Tracy Chapman. I like this song not least because the protaganist is so determined to sacrifice herself for love.
13. Semper crescis/aut decrescis
O Fortuna, from Carmina Burana. Great fun to sing, although we didn't do the entire Carmina Burana in MUCS.
14. He went up to heaven in a whirlwind!
Elijah, by Felix Mendelssohn. This one we did sing in MUCS, and it's ace fun. The entire last movement (which goes for at least 10 mins) consists of one line (the above) being sung over and over and over again. And yeah, he went up to heaven in a whirlwind!
15. Lying awake intent on tuning in on you
Video Killed the Radio Star, by The Buggles and later by The Presidents of the United States of America. One of the earliest video clips I remember seeing incidentally.
16. Doctor, doctor, please!
Doctor Doctor, by UFO. One of Dean's - but a great song. Why do these Australian Idol contestants keep doing crap songs when there's good music out there? Be grateful I didn't put anything from MSG in. ;-)
17. And he says "I know what I want and I want it now.."
Mr Vain, by CultureBeat. Nightclubbing again...
18. The TV's on/that's what it's for
Accidentally Kelly Street, by Frente. I seriously thought they'd broken up, thanks for the heads up
barrington. This is a song I associate with one sharehouse in particular and the group of friends from it.
19. And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains
Khe Sahn, by Cold Chisel. OK, who's kicking themselves? ;-) This does kind of add to my theory that no one actually knows the lyrics to that song, they just know the drunkenese version.
20. I still need your love/we're in this together
In Private, by Dusty Springfield. This was on the radio every morning driving into school in Belgium for weeks... I love her voice!
21. Don't look so frightened/this is just a passing phase/one of my bad days
One of my Turns by Pink Floyd. I used to listen to The Wall when I was depressed during my Uni days... it's great for lifting you out of depression. This song sums up so much manic energy for me. I also was in Europe during The Wall at The Wall concert, although I was actually in Norway at the time. Saw the concert live on Swedish TV, then repeated on Belgian TV, French TV and finally the BBC's repeat. I love the French subtitling, especially Cours cours cours cours cours cours cours cours cours....
22. She lies and says she's in love with him
Better Man, by Pearl Jam. Another sharehouse, another time.
23. Upon her needle she was crucified
Cheap Wine, by Cold Chisel. One of the most evocative lyrics out of them, and they have some damn good lyrics. Even if I mostly know the drunken versions. ;-)
24. Don't say goodbye/say you're gonna stay for ever
High Enough, by Damn Yankees. A Dean one. Another 80s Hair Ballad. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good hair ballad... ;-)
25. I could not understand
What's the Frequency, Kenneth, by REM. A classic case of complete confusion.
So there you have it, a small trip through what is often on high rotation in my brain.
