Feb. 18th, 2005 10:56 amSecond game of the mixed season last night, at the completely ungodly hour of 9.40pm. This hour also meant that the umpires were rushing us onto the courts as quickly as possible because "the lights go off as soon as we've finished".
Well, except that Albert Park has taken over the lower courts for the moment due to the Grand Prix and their last game started at 10pm, so no they didn't.
It was a very odd game. We played a team that sounded like an oil company - I forgot to ask if they were or not. They had three members from another team playing, which will make it interesting when those two teams play each other. I thought they were just filling in, but no, they'd agreed to play with two teams. In the same competition. Uh-huh.
We won, 22-1, which is a bit more of a slaughter than a win. Kirsten ended up playing against a guy who she thought looked familiar, and who turned out to be a groomsman from a wedding she was bridesmaid at. His wife (and baby) were cheering on the sidelines, not altogether effectively.
A large part of our success was due to Nick, who remains about three levels higher than the rest of the competition both skills and height-wise. The rest was due to inexperience by their players, who were being called for stepping/obstruction/contact with alarming regularity.
They're splitting the comp week after next. From looking at the ladder, the 5 teams who've won by scores of 20-something will be going into group A, and the ones who've lost by similar amounts will be going into group B. Which should make for a bit more of an even competition, touch wood.
As long as we don't end up with too many 9.40pm games I'll be happy.
