I came to Monash's open day on the weekend. Not deliberately, I needed to restreak my agro plates so that the plants can be transformed soonish (touch wood). In fact I'd forgotten there was an open day on, despite receiving several e-mails from the faculty, the department and the university as a whole on the topic. But when we got here (I got Dean to drive me down for a change!) there were people with balloons and many more cars than is usual for a weekend. So after I'd restreaked we went for a wander in search of a sausage sizzle. It was an open day. There's always a sausage sizzle.

It was bizarre. The only other open day I've been to is Melbourne Uni's and that was (again) because I was on my way to the lab to do something. Melbourne's I remember as being fairly vibrant with lots of people wandering around. Yesterday there were people there but they weren't really in groups, and we couldn't find anything. We couldn't work out where people were getting the showbags from, we couldn't find the balloons, we did find the chinese lion dancers but we didn't see any other clubs and societies tables. I know Monash is a lot more spread out than Melbourne, but even so, the place felt dead. There didn't appear to be a central hub, or if there was we certainly didn't find it. (Having said that though, we did find the radiography display. Great ultrasounds, guys).

And we only found one sausage sizzle, which turned out to have only vegetarian patties. Despite seeing people with sausages in bread with onions. So we gave up and went to Bunnings instead.

Next week we're going to Melbourne's open day - I really want to see if my memory is accurate or if all the current crop of year 12 students have already decided where they're going and can't be arsed checking it out

Waiting for plates to dry I found myself singing (to the Meadow Lea ad tune) "You ought to be emasculated".

I'm a bit worried about that.
