Dec. 5th, 2002 06:17 pmWell we failed to see any of the eclipse.
Dean and I had gone up to his parents place, and thence to the local bowls club for tea (Dean's now old. Well, 31 anyway) and so we were inside when it happened. We'd also given up on being able to see it given that it had poured rain all day, but apparently it cleared up just beforehand. It was only a partial eclipse in Melb anyway.
The last eclipse that we had that I managed to see was the lunar eclipse a couple of years ago. It was totally surreal. For the first time the moon looked like a rock and it was hanging in the sky in a way that rocks, generally speaking, are really, really, really not supposed to. I totally understood the primeval impulse to hide in caves - a large part of me was going "Run! There's a bloody great rock up there!!" I kept giving in to it and going inside, and then coming out 10 or so minutes later to see if it was still there.
Eventually the earth, sun and moon moved on and the moon became a bright shiny disc again. But for a while I saw it in its true form - a red, menacing lump of rock ready to drop out of the sky and crush us all.
The weather here keeps doing funny things. It was freezing on Sat, hot on Sun and now we're back to hailing. I wish it would make up its mind. I keep wearing totally inappropriate clothing and forgetting umbrellas. I'd love to know what the current betting on the likelihood of the Boxing Day test being able to play Day 1 is. Traditionally it should be washed out, but the way we're going it could be anything from 5oC and snowing to 45oC and dusty. Maybe I should find a TAB... ;-)
