Jan. 16th, 2003 10:45 amI went to Trivia last night for the first time in ages.
We go to a pub in Prahran. There had been a few changes since the last time I was there, notably that the host has left and a new one come in.
This was a bit disappointing, not least because we followed the original host from Carlton (they closed our pub there).
Still, we thought, give the new guy a go I suppose.
He irritated the hell out of me. To the point that I left before he gave the jackpot answers. Why? A combination of things really. Some were probably due to inexperience (he kept forgetting to put the music on, and given that we had evesdropping teams to both sides that was kind of annoying), he had a crowd of friends so he kept giving clues, he can't add up ("tonight's highest round scorer got 27" - that's funny, we got 28 and the winning team got 29 for that round...) and most annoying for me was that the teams would take up the jackpot answers, he'd glance at them, crumple them up and chuck them away. Now I know we had no clue on the three questions given. Even so, it's pretty rude (and fairly unfunny after the first two or three). But to then start asking teams if they'd given their answers in yet because he can't freaking remember who has and hasn't really annoyed me. So I left and now I'll never know what the last film Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were in together was. (Unless I look up the IMDB of course, which will probably happen).
The other reason I left was because he's obviously on orders to drag the night out as long as possible so that we'll drink more. Um, guys, it's a Wednesday night. Some of us were quite happy for the night to finish at 10ish. 11ish is really getting a bit late. Particularly when there's quite a lot of work teams, who don't actually live in Prahran there. A lot of us are driving.
Dean already hates this particular pub because the food is average and overpriced (even for Prahran - think Mt Hotham prices), and the drinks are on the pricey side too. $7.50 for a jug of coke is a bit harsh. What's really killing their drinks is when you get the bill at around 10pm and everyone goes "I've spent how much? Shit, I'm not drinking any more tonight!" Our team mostly funds ourselves with previous winnings and by drinking water (it's free).
Maybe he'll be better next week... but
Come back Sandy, we miss you! Your music was great!
And note to self: while the Australian Open is on, Punt Rd is NOT a quick way to get to Prahran. Especially at 7.15pm, right before the second session starts. Doh!
