Mar. 4th, 2003 08:49 amWe played netball last night.
It was so frustrating. And depressing. And annoying.
The reasons were partly to do with umpiring (one umpire was being very strict up one end while the other was hopeless) but mostly to do with the reaction of the other team.
I mostly don't get upset by shoddy umpiring. I certainly don't point out stuff they've missed to them. Apart from being rude and annoying the umpires, it's just not worth it. If it's shoddy, then it's shoddy in both directions and both teams are being disadvantaged by it.
(If the umpire's definitely against us then I will get upset by it. But mostly he/she isn't.)
The team we played last night was getting very upset by it. Particularly the guys, who felt the umpiring was focusing on them and against them. It wasn't - there were bad decisions regarding stepping, contact and obstruction against both teams. The majority of the contacts were actually contacts however, and the reason that their team had more was mostly to do with experience - they had two guys who just hadn't played as much and were inadvertently contacting more. Been there, done that.
Their attitude started really getting on my nerves though. Every decision started being questioned or commented on and it finally culminated in one guy (who had a real chip on his shoulder about being called for breaking at the centre pass) refusing to stand behind the lines at our centre pass. Personally I would have blown the whistle and just called him for breaking (again) but the good umpire apparently either didn't realise that was what he was doing or just decided that at 10pm at night it wasn't worth the hassle because she just glared at him until he moved.
The upshot was that I really didn't enjoy the game that much. And we won, 15-9.
Last week's game was much more enjoyable, and we lost that 22-20. Both teams were happy, and felt they'd played well. (It was a close match). This week both teams were unhappy and just wanted to go home.
It will be interesting to see how the finals go... especially as the good umpire came over and told both teams that they will be picking up all faults during finals matches. I am seriously considering putting in a request not to have the shoddy umpire at any time during the finals. If we do have him I can see there being punchups on the court.
