The new all-women netball team that we started up played our first game last night.
We were terrible.
But I haven't laughed so much during a game since the very early days of Gelf and Freakazoid.
Most of the team plays with the mixed team on Mondays. This lead to one set of problems, where we'd throw the ball while forgetting that our team mates weren't, in fact, about a foot taller and willing and able to leap small buildings.
The rest hadn't played in about 10 years, which lead to the other set of problems, where they'd throw to where we were when they threw the ball, to the other team, or, on one fairly spectacular occasion, over the fence and into the road (you've got to admit that getting the ball over a 3 and a bit metre fence is pretty impressive. Lucky it was the road side and not the railway side, as that would have been a bitch to get back. Also lucky it wasn't my ball!) One player was quite good, except for her moments of complete un-coordination, where suddenly she'd fall over due to mixing up her feet or something (I think she was concentrating on which foot had landed first).
We were also handicapped in that I was playing either GS or GA. This usually happens only when we're desperate as I can't shoot for shit. Something I proved again last night (I had two bounce out of the ring! How?! I didn't think they were supposed to be able to do that!)
We ended up losing 26-5. To a team which was a player short, and somewhat bemused by our complete lack of ability. ("Can you tell we've never played together before?" "Um, yes.")
Next week's aim is to get 6 goals. Or win, whichever's more likely. ;-)
The best bit of the night for me though came at the end, when I admitted that I'd been playing since 1981. One player looked at me in disbelief and said
"'81?!? I wasn't even born then! How old are you?"
"31. How old did you think I was?"
"I dunno, 24..?"
Hee.
My sister's then looked over and said "But you know I'm 25 and you know she's my older sister!"
"Yeah, but I still thought she was about 24, maybe 26..."
Double hee. :-)
over 20 years I've been playing and I'm still crap. Oh well. :-)
