So we headed north out of Brisbane and are now in Bundaberg. So far we've done the distillery tour, watched the start of the State of Origin in a pub filled with maroon jumpers (and $1 pots/$3 bundy rums on tap), been swimming at Mon Repos beach (no turtles beaching though, wrong season) and we're heading to the southern part of the reef on Sunday.

Oh and I managed to stir a friend from 2000km away thanks to the wonders of SMS. Heh. :-)

It's also the same temperature here as in London I believe, which is odd. :-)

We'll have to start heading south again on Monday though, particularly because we're planning on taking the coastal route.

Bundy's reminding me a lot of Mildura, probably because it's a similar size, has a large river in the middle, and a broad main street that stretches for quite a long way and has a lot of motels at one end. It's also very laid back, something that Dean in particular is really enjoying. The traffic goes under the speed limit, and we're all on tropical time.

There's been a lot of changes since I was last here (1993), predominantly in the numbers/types of shops and the growth in baby boomer retirees. There seems to be an entire community of retirees down on the coast these days.

The sugar cane and red earth remains the same though, and I'm sure the cane fires still occur. Too early in the year just now though, although the cane's nearly at prime height.

Mon Repos is a gorgeous beach, if my photos turn out I'll post that one. I can see why the turtles beach there, it drops very steeply into deep water (and it's one of the few places on this part of the coast without rocky shores). We tried to bodysurf but the waves were too small and breaking far too far in. So mostly we floated and swam and now I'm absolutely buggered. Not sure how this day trip snorkelling on the reef is going to leave me!

I may also have tanned. So might Dean, but opinion is divided as to whether he is actually capable of tanning. We'll see. :-)
