TV stuff

I've been watching Numb3rs. And I have to admit, it's got me hooked. OK, at least part of that is an ongoing infatuation with Rob Morrow which started with Northern Exposure (and continues even though his current series has no moose, which is a definite lack actually and something they should look at. Surely they can find somewhere in LA to put just one moose?), and part of it is a new, bizarre infatuation with David Krumholtz (not just for the surname, even though it cracks me up), but most of it is seeing just how tenuously they can connect maths with crime-fighting. I mean, I like the idea of making maths 'sexy'(ish), but some of the scenarios... are funny.

I mean, plane crash. My first thought would be - of course - "Call the mathematician!" Ditto gang warfare, UFOs, terror threats, epidemic (does LA have no epidemiologists then?), and pretty much everything else. Last night was actually an unusual episode in that ringing up a mathematician made sense (casinos being targeted by card counters, who were actually using equations to beat the shuffling machines). The rest of the time they probably should have called in someone else (frequently whatever the local version of the SES is - unless of course Charlie is in fact a member and it just hasn't been mentioned yet.)

But it makes me laugh. I love how Charlie has blackboards in his basement so he can do maths on them in his spare time. I actually do laugh a lot at the whole academic thing - God only knows when he has time to research and publish, let alone teach. I also love how the FBI in this series happily bring in some outside bloke, even if he is the brother of one of them, and spill the beans about all their leads and investigations.

And hey, it's making maths sexy. Allegedly.

And bonus - Lou Diamond Phillips keeps popping up. Heh, I'm so shallow.

The main reason I like it though is that my maths ability is low level enough that the flaws don't bother me, whereas things like CSI I spend large amounts of time criticizing what's going on. Oh and I can't stand David Caruso, even at the best of times. Or those guys off NCIS either. Meh.

Edit: and after a bit of googling, I've just realised that at least part of the reason some of the character development in Numb3rs doesn't make sense is that channel 10 are showing them completely out of order. Thanks 10!
