So the Zimbabwean cholera epidemic's over, is it?

"A countrywide epidemic of cholera has been occurring in Zimbabwe
since August 2008. The epidemic currently affects 9 out of the 10
provinces in the country, and at least 57 (67.9 percent) out of a
total of 84 rural and urban districts. As of 15 Dec 2008, a total
of 18 413 suspected cases had been reported to the World Health
Organization (WHO), by way of the Ministry of Health and Child
Welfare (MoHCW)'s surveillance department."

(from ProMed).

And from here:

The United Nations says 978 people have now been killed by the
cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe, an increase of 25 percent from the last
figure given 3 days ago.

*sigh*

What was interesting (to me) was comparing the population breakdown statistics given by the CIA World Factbook for Zimbabwe and Botswana:

Zimbabwe:

0-14 years: 43.9%
15-64 years: 52.3%
65+ years: 3.9%
median age: 17.6 years (16.4 males, 18.8 females)

Botswana:

0-14 years: 35.2%
15-64 years: 60.9%
65+ years: 3.9%
median age: 21.2 years (21 males, 21.4 females)

Holy shit. I know intellectually that HIV/AIDS has ripped through, but those statistics are just incredible. Those are not hugely dissimilar countries, geographically speaking at least, and yet - there's an enormous gap in the 15-64 year old age group.

oh ffs

Dear Melbourne Taxi Drivers,

Please, please, please make up your bloody minds.

Either be in favour of safety screens, or against safety screens but either way stop blocking the bloody streets while you make your damn minds up!

Sheesh!
