Funk it Up.

Back when I started Uni I used to go to aerobics classes on a regular basis. Some classes - the straight aerobics ones - I was OK at. Others - Step - I was the second least co-ordinated person in the room. The least co-ordinated was my friend Ness, who managed to explode the Step in one class by hitting it at the wrong angle (and cracking both of us up so badly we couldn't do anything for a couple of minutes).

So after a break of *cough* many years, I went to my first class in ages yesterday. It was a BodyJam class, which is based around dance moves. I think having done much of my formative dancing in the late 80s/early 90s may have been a disadvantage in this class. It certainly contributed to me being by far the least co-ordinated person in the room.

I could not get the routine down. I could get segments, then we'd learn a new bit and I'd lose the last bit. I also have left/right blindness, which was making instructions like "left leg! right arm!" interesting to follow, more so because I was watching the bouncy and cheerful instructor in the mirror and copying him. Oops. Heh. I realised right towards the second last time we did one routine that I'd be better off concentrating on remembering what came next than watching him, and bugger me, it worked. Well, I still missed the C-step thingy and had the wrong arm/leg combination but I was at least on the beat and going in the right direction.

But it was ace fun. And I went with my friend Lex, which meant that there was someone else in the room to catch my eye and giggle hysterically when the instructor yelled "you're doing great!" Yup. 'Cept for that direction and eye/foot thing, we're right up there with the people who know what they're doing and are using the correct muscles to do so. (At one point the instructor went "can you feel the burn in your abdominals?!" I looked at Lex, she looked at me - and both of us went "Huh? We're doing this wrong, aren't we.")

So we're now making plans to get Ness to come along with us. And not just so there's someone else uncoordinated (actually she's probably better at this than I am - certainly she's fitter.) And hey, now I have some Funk and some Hip Hop moves for if I ever go clubbing again. :-)
