Sep. 2nd, 2002 05:31 pmIt's definitely approaching the equinox. For starters I'm driving to work in daylight. I really have to get some prescription sunglasses so I don't accidentally merge into someone while heading east on the South-Eastern.
The view from the Bolte Bridge is lovely in the morning, the sweep across the bay with the remnants of dawn still high in the sky and everything tinged golden with the new sun. It's strange given how much of our culture revolves around the sea that Melbourne still doesn't really utilise the bay, most of us (myself included) live away from it and only go down on special occasions. I'd quite like to live near the beach, but Dean worries about rust (his car is one year younger than me, so I guess it's a fair call) so I make do with tramming down to St Kilda to catch up with friends every so often, or heading across to Williamstown to buy fish and chips and wander along the foreshore.
Still, I like the light changes, and being able to watch the sea and the changes from grey to blue, to purple according to light and the mood of the weather. I like watching the oil tankers chug across to the refineries and seeing the ferries to Tassie and across the bay moving in and out. I enjoyed living (briefly) in Sydney, and I think a lot of it had to do with being able to spend all the weekend on, in or around the water.
I haven't been swimming in the sea for ages - too afraid of body shape combined with lack of time and a really crap summer last year. Sometimes I find myself dreaming of being weightless, or of bodysurfing, with the strange sensation you get on your skin when you're submerged in something all the same temperature. Akin to walking through a warm night, when the air is a similar temperature to your skin. I like the feeling of being in the water.
