girly night
Jul. 2nd, 2006 11:56 amWe had a girly night at Sal's place last night. We ended up watching Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I think Sal had seen one, but the rest of us hadn't seen either of them.
It was strange. When did 1994 Ethan Hawke start looking so young? But the clothes, the music, the feelings all took me back to a similar time in my life. I recognised all the passion and angst, but it felt alien to me.
When did I get older? I don't remember changing.
The second film was interesting. I think I was the only person in the room not disappointed by the ending. I found watching the reunion and the body language - reaching out to touch, then not being confident enough to do so, together and separated by the events of the previous nine years - fascinating.
The biggest physical difference between the 1994 and 2004 selves of the actors was that they were both much thinner in 2004. Ethan Hawke was gaunt, with shadows along his cheekbones that kept fooling me into thinking he had one of those odd facial hair lines there. But no, it was just protruding bone. Julie Delpy had more skin damage, and protruding shoulder blades. And yet, neither was overweight, or even at probably normal weight in 1994. It was kind of scary (and probably the most unrealistic aspect of the story actually - how often are people substantially thinner in their 30s than their 20s?) Ethan should really have given up on the facial hair in the second movie - if you can't grow more than that in 10 years, shave it. And lose the really bad semi-cowboy shirt from 2004.
So do they get together? As Sal pointed out, the question is actually answered in the first five minutes of the second film. If you're an optimist - yes. If not, no. Opinions in our group were divided.
I'd like a third movie, although I know it won't happen. But to see them again in their 40s, and where they had gone in between would be interesting.
