Jun. 8th, 2007 04:38 pmA bit of a social week this week.
Monday I played netball. We won. This makes 3 for 3, which is a bit of a record for the Monday night team. Go Topes!
Tuesday I picked up
ang_grrr from the airport, and drove her and
shnetti (who'd gone out to meet her but used public transport to get there) back to my place, then out to Lygon St for tea. It's been really strange meeting
ang_grrr in the flesh - we've known each other for quite some time online, and this was just like that only with more accents involved. Other than that it's been really normal - we sort of started giggling at the airport and didn't really stop. Later in the night
tra4ce joined us at Brunetti's, and more reminiscing/giggling ensued. Mmm, chocolate...
Wednesday we went out again with
ang_grrr for tea, this time meeting
essjay,
droxina, Eeeek, and ToM for Nepalese cuisine (just like Indian, only Dean can eat it.) I actually missed most of the eating part, as I buggered off to play netball (we lost, convincingly) and came back just in time to polish off the last of the potato naan bread. There was apparently quite a bit of discussion about the Nepalese calamari, prepared of course from the world famous Himalayan squid. After quite a bit of texting and some phoning, we managed to meet
barrington for after dinner coffee/chocolate (mmm, chocolate) at the Gelobar.
It's quite strange - I've known pretty much all these people for ages. I live in the same city as most of them. And yet I've not seen
droxina for at least a year, Eeeek for the same time,
essjay since before I got married, and ToM and
barrington more recently. We may need to socialise more often!
Thursday, I played netball. It occurs to me at this point that netball is in fact most of my social life. Figures. We lost by 1, which.. actually I'd better not start. Suffice it to say that when I saw the team uniform it brought back memories of a team I played against at least 10 years ago, whose coach spent the entire time on the sideline going "Break their centre pass girls!" as they thrashed us by about 20 goals. It's not often I want to really kill someone, but that woman I was ready to make an exception for. And this team had the same uniform, probably because they went to the same school. Hm. I only start feeling really old when I realise that I'm almost 20 years older than some people I'm playing against. I'm frequently 10 years older than people I play with. I need to improve my fitness something shocking[1].
So now we're heading into the long weekend, to which I can only say, thank God. I need to sleep. :-) I'm not sure what I'm doing over the weekend, other than probably attempting some more cleaning, and trying to catch up with the varied people I know that have hit town for Convergence2. Oh and playing soccer.
[1]it's not really a non-sequiteur. Well, OK, a bit, but actually I can feel myself getting slower by the minute.

Date: 2007-06-08 04:37 pm (UTC)In the past, I was always really nervous about meeting up with people in real life when I'd only previously known them online...I think it's a case of being able to talk more freely online, because the person isn't sitting in front of you and isn't reacting in one way or another which can make it difficult to talk about certain subjects. So I worried that I might not actually get on with them as easily when we came face to face...but despite any initial worries, I've always been very pleasantly surprised when I do meet internet friends in person and it's no longer as big a deal.
And if any of this didn't make sense, I do apologise - I got very little sleep last night and then was at a job aptitude test thing earlier so my brain has been veritably melted :)
