I think it's more that being slightly left of center (though I'm not sure I'd even put Obama left of center, but still) leaves room for accusations of communism and is just... evil. Just evil. How dare you want to give anything to the poor... It's not like they give your campaign money, so why bother.

Yeah, after one of the other debates, my sister was flipping out because Obama mentioned socialism and called it a good thing. Because everyone knows that socialism = communism.
