Sexpo

Dean and I went to Sexpo on the weekend. It was quite odd, not least because it was combined with the X-treme toys exhibition. So mostly there was a lot of sex shop stuff (what is it with neon plastic and sex toys? I always wonder) but there were also exhibits on kayaking, sky diving and blue-water fishing.

I'm still not sure which category the spas fitted into though.

I think the exhibit that gave me the biggest giggle was the MacFarlane Burnett Institute one - mostly because I wasn't expecting it. I should have been - they do all the HIV and a large amount of Hep B and C work there - but somehow I never expect my worlds to cross quite so strangely.

Dean liked the 'body art' exhibits, particularly the "make your own moulds" bit. Other than the X-treme exhibits, I probably liked the clothes ones best. And they had DISCOUNTS! ;-)

What really struck me about Sexpo was how very straight it all was. Aimed right at the mainstream, not a lot of fetish or gay sex apparent. So we fitted right in with all the other wandering couples. Although we were there Sunday midday, so it is possible if not probable that we just missed the fetish mob - they tend to be late night. They definitely had a stand set up. My friend - who went on a different day - said that they were doing exhibitions when he was there. The other thing that struck me is how much the porn industry is geared toward men. I mean, 'money shot' kind of gives it away a bit really when you think about it. I know that there is a lot of female oriented stuff, but it really wasn't that apparent. Maybe it was the early morning thing again.

We missed Ron Jeremy - who I've only ever seen in mainstream movies! Notably 'Detroit Rock City' and 'Orgazmo' - but did see both a female and a male stripper. Note to the male: yellow bonds shorts under the chaps look stupid. Really, really, really stupid. And learn to dance, dammit! ;-) The female was OK, although I did spend large parts of today singing "Du. Du habst. Du habst mir..". Neither was down to the bare essentials though - illegal in Vic. As is selling X-rated vids, so there were only R-rated. Bizarre. :-)

Other odd stuff: what is it with brothel signs and inability to (a) spell and (b) punctuate. For fucks sake, peoples! Why do guys want photos taken with naked prostitutes? Why do women, come to that (yeah some were...). I mean, who are you going to show these to? And why is no one going "oh my god I look terrible next to these totally thin, 10 years younger and bleached blonde women!" ;-)

To sum it up - it was fun. Dunno if we'll go next year, although I know Dean wants to. Maybe we'll try for the Sat night and see the fetish people. But then again, if you're not in the game it all looks sad and rather pathetic from the outside. Kind of like RPGing really. ;-)

But hey, we got a set of lips on a keyring... ;-)

So what is it about sex exhibitions and late November? I mean, it can't even be something to do with the season...
