And a better explanation than I can write of why Single Ladies (put a ring on it) irritates me so much.

Also:

I can’t even start on “If I Were A Boy”… that’s like a whole nother blog in itself.

Hell yeah. And it's maudlin to boot.

Edit: Hm, not sure that "maudlin" is the exact word I'm after here. "Mawkishly maudlin"? "Annoyingly depressing"? "Reminds me of 'Hey True Blue' - seriously, Worst Ever Big Finale Song Choice I've ever been involved with, and no one will bloody listen when you point that out dammit"? "Blah and depressing"? OK, most of those aren't 'words' per se, but God I hate that song, and the lyrics are seriously only part of it. Amongst the other parts are Mix playing it every bloody half hour, it's depressing and God, Beyonce, Get Over It. Dump him and leave and Stop Singing about it! Meh. And get over your stupidly idealised idea of manhood, sheesh.

I read that, and the article it linked to, and somehow ended up listening to lots of 90s R&B on YouTube. Heh. Anyway, what I came away with is that the messages in Beyoncé's lyrics are pretty much the opposite of the messages in TLC and Aaliyah lyrics. Well, if not completely the opposite, then somewhere near it. I used to like Beyoncé, but I really can't stand anything on the new album. It's wimpy and sellout. And thanks to her (and a few other people), every guy my age (who is still single, under 300 pounds, and not a complete redneck) expects women to be obsessed with keeping themselves groomed and toned like strippers, and to aspire to being a trophy wife. Contrast this with TLC's "Unpretty", which was one of my favorite songs in high school...

Even though we know that the lyrics are "all the single ladies", Ant and I always hear/sing "I'm a cigarette".
