this sporting life
Mar. 5th, 2009 04:59 pmI only play in three sporting competitions. Unfortunately two of them manage to fall on the long weekend this weekend, being on Sunday and Monday respectively.
Why the hell anyone bothers scheduling a game on the Sunday of a long weekend I really don't know, but that competition does, consistently. They only don't schedule games when the public holiday falls on the Sunday, which means I suppose that we won't have a game on Easter Sunday this year or on Anzac Day next year. For a while there they were scheduling games then too and being surprised at the number of forfeits they got.
Anyway.
Normally the long weekends are annoying, but not that much of an issue - we have enough players that at least some of them are staying in town over the time, and we can field a team. At this stage though I think we're forfeiting the Sunday match. So far we have 2 and a half (one is actually out of town but willing to come back a bit early if we play but would prefer not to) guys and 1 girl who are able to play. One of the guys is asking another female friend if she's able to play, and if so we'll go ahead, if not I think we bail. I just can't be bothered trying to find another woman when I'm not going to be in town myself.
The Monday game is irritating. If I'd realised that this competition was going to schedule a game on the Monday I would have booked an earlier flight back. As it is we've got 5/7 players. Which is enough to take the court, but not quite enough for a full team. Having just about exhausted my reservoir of spare players I've now appealed to the rest of the team to start asking their friends. As for the one player who didn't bother to check the draw and assumed the game wasn't on, so scheduled something for Monday night when she was in town... argh. There may or may not be an additional player I haven't heard from, no one seems to know when she gets back from Singapore.
Apart from all this, I'm actually quite looking forward to getting out of Melbourne and seeing my niece for the first time. I'm just hoping I don't get frantic phone calls while I'm up there.
