Sep. 18th, 2009 08:46 amLast night we played netball. In the rain. The teeming rain (wasn't quite pouring.)
I'd looked at the BOM website before I left, and saw that it was clearing. So, apparently, had the competition organisers. So we played. It didn't clear. It got heavier.
By half time we were soaked. "BOM said it's going to clear!" said the organiser.
It got heavier again. We splashed around and rediscovered that you can't do bounce passes in the wet. You also can't stop very suddenly, leading to a lot of stepping calls. It's also obvious when you've stepped, or dragged, or anything really - the splashy noises really give it away.
There were no injuries, not least because our team got very cautious. The GD from the other team managed a spectacular skid/slide/roll across the court though.
By the end of the game we were saturated. One of the umpires works at Krispy Kreme and and brought donuts, which he kindly offered to all the now shivering players who'd huddled in the club room to try and warm up a bit. The air and the rain weren't too cold, but when the breeze picked up it got nippy.
By this time of course we were all giggling. When you're that soaked through it does become funny. The dry umpires (the other game had forfeited) laughed at the 15 (we played one short) of us who were standing around soaking wet looking like drowned rats and dripping water and Krispy Kreme crumbs on the clubhouse floor.
"Please tell me you've cancelled the 7.10pm game?" asked our GK who'd been filling in for us and was scheduled to play again in 40 minutes with her normal team.
"Yeah, cancelled the next two games."
"Now you decide it's too wet."
The rain subsided to a bare drizzle, so we headed off home. One of our players was going by bike directly to a dinner. Heh, that would have been interesting.
I dropped our GK off home and our C at the station. On the way the rain stopped. I passed the competition where we used to play. They were just taking the court for the first game.
The car started misting up, so I had to put the airconditioning on to demist it (my demister is nowhere near as effective). By the time I got home I was shivering again.
Had a shower and discovered that yes, all my netball clothes and shoes were completely soaked. I'd started thinking that my underwear (at least) had started to dry out... but not so much actually. I really only realised how wet they were when I picked them up to put them in the washing machine.
Then I sat on the couch and watched Glee Club and The Amazing Race. As a result I've been singing "Don't stop believing" all morning.
But hey, we won 13-10. :-) I'm just hoping there's no rain on Monday night!
