long weekend weather
Jan. 30th, 2003 05:38 pmSo after a couple of hot days it's pouring rain again.
Saturday was the hottest day since 1939. 44.1oC. It didn't actually feel that hot - admittedly, once it gets over 40oC it's all pretty much the same really - and it was really dry so I didn't mind it too much. The only point it felt oppressive was walking across the bitumen car park at the shopping centre - heat from both sides is kind of warm. It was even hotter in the north east of the state (46oC) and probably more so the further north/central you went (I wasn't paying attention). Dean and I didn't really do that much, just lazed around and went to the shopping centre. All the roads were deserted - except around Northlands. Guess the idea of free airconditioning had occurred to a lot of people... :-) We were going to finally go and see LOTR:TT, but the cinema was packed so we had ice-cream (another crowd meme), wandered around for a bit, bought a book and left.
Saturday night we watched Minority Report. It was different to how I'd expected it to be - I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting though. I don't think I've read the original story, as none of it seemed familiar (except for everything vaguely reminding me of Brazil. But then, anything futuristic with people in uniform crashing into houses reminds me of Brazil.) What really struck me though was how much emphasis was placed on irises as a means of identification, and how little on DNA. In that respect it was a lot like GATTACA in that various lines of technology didn't appear to be keeping up with each other. In GATTACA it was odd that they had so much instant DNA reading technology but couldn't make nerves regenerate. In Minority Report they had to look into people's eyes to identify them, they couldn't just take a cell or something with those rather cute spiders. Oh well. I enjoyed the film - and we had Magnums. Lots of ice-cream. :-)
Sunday was forecast to be another hot day, so off we headed down the Penninsula. As it turned out, it wasn't so I didn't end up going to the beach at all. We did go up Arthur's Seat - I had really forgotten how beautiful (even with the smoke obscuring everything past about 5km) the outlook across the bay is. We did the circuit walk around to Mathew Flinder's cairn and then past the gardens. A short walk, and very nice in the cool of the day. :-) After Arthur's Seat we headed into Dromana - and encountered the hordes of people who'd come down for the long weekend. I would have liked to have continued down into Portsea and then across the heads to Queenscliff - but it was getting late and we had the timeshare terrier/terror waiting for us so we headed back home. Oh yeah, and it was Australia Day. Since I stopped being in Guides I tend not to notice apart from the public holiday. :-)
Monday was cool again (yay!) and again we did very little other than some vague cleaning and shopping. The terror went home again. We went to tea. I think
epideme's covered that pretty comprehensively. ;-) I had fun. The food was good. My curry came quickly. ;-) Next season F2P!
Unfortunately Tuesday meant going back to work - and for a large part of Victoria's kids, back to school. Damn, I was really enjoying the quick drive into work... Not as much as Jan 2/3 - that was the quietest I have seen the roads on a workday morning ever. It was great. :-)
In other news we've sampled and are hoping for some protein expression. fingers crossed. I've never done a Western before...
