Feb. 9th, 2003 08:19 pmThe government has very kindly sent me a fridge magnet.
Telling me what to do in case of suspicious terrorist activity.
Do you think i can define "terrorist" as writing graffiti, vandalising the phone round the corner, car theft, that dodgy chick on drugs up the road who wanders the street looking for ways to get cash for drugs or am I stuck with Howard's definition?
Which pretty much appears to be: Anyone who is "unAustralian".
Well that's half the current cricket team out, on sportsmanship grounds anyway... ;-)

Date: 2003-02-09 01:41 pm (UTC)The small problem with this is that neither Dean nor myself can remember where the package got put.
It's in the house.
Somewhere.
Personally I think the frige magnet would go nicely next to the "Signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease" one on the fridge.
And they've put so much effort in to the brochure I think I should read it before returning it.
Although I'm still tempted to ring the hotline and say:
"I live in Coburg."
And hang up.

Date: 2003-02-09 06:37 pm (UTC)Giuliani was criticised for spending money on a disaster center in New York, when in fact the only thing he got wrong was the location. (Why put it in one of the Towers?). Beyond all the Government propaganda (and admittedly 90% of it is), if the information in this booklet prevents a major tragedy, then surely it's money well spent?
One thing that gets me is that after Bali, is everyone asked the government: Why didn't you tell us of the threat? Well now they have.
The fact is that despite the "heightened security alert" and despite of Bali, Australian's still feel safe, but the terrorists are not finished with Australia yet, and anything done to make their job harder cannot be all bad. At the very least, read what it has to say and then if you still think Howard is wasting your money, write to your MP.
