Following a link from [livejournal.com profile] dalmeny brought me to homicide statistics for Australia.

What made me interested was the rates. For 2006-07 (most recent data published) the rates by state are:

NT: 7.93 homicides per 100,000 people
WA: 1.21/100,000
SA: 0.74/100,000
QLD: 1.20/100,000
NSW: 1.25/100,000
VIC: 0.90/100,000
TAS: 1.59/100,000
ACT: 1.14/100,000

Overall Australia's rate is 1.31 per 100,000 people. What really amazed me was the NT rate. That is unbelievably high compared to all the other states. And yet it really didn't surprise me that it was higher at all, just how much higher it was, the rate being symptomatic of so many other things. NT is the state with the highest level of people living in poverty, for starters. *sigh* It'd be interesting to see alcohol consumption rates per state and compare, for seconds. *sigh* Also, firearms per head of population.

Compared to the rest of the world it's a very safe place to live. But it's still too high.
