Dec. 22nd, 2010 09:24 amI've been watching the AFL nude photos saga with slight bemusement.
For starters, seriously, I had no idea that nude photos were such an integral part of footy trips. I can honestly say that in all the time I've played sport I've not managed one nude or even semi-nude photo during a team breakup do. And yet here we have naked photos of players taken by other players and then kept on their lap tops as mementos. It does sort of make the "oh no, there are no gay, bi- or bi-curious players in the AFL!!" stance taken by some people to seem... well, suspect at best.
For seconds I had no idea there was such a culture of 16/17 year olds picking up footballers at parties. Where exactly did her parents think she was? And what did they think she was doing? Yeah, she's legal... but from her comments I'm not sure I'd describe her as particularly mature[1]. And I can understand part of where she's coming from. Here are these guys with power, who are attractive - and they're just brushing her off. On top of that she apparently had a miscarriage to a footballer last year. The footballers denied any wrongdoing, the AFL determined no laws had been broken and then ignored her, she was pilloried in sections of the media for "ruining" the reputations of those footballers she'd named as the possible father of the child, and then she apparently had a relationship with a police officer who is now under investigation. Who the hell was looking after her interests? She is still legally a child - and at the time of the initial reports she was a pregnant 16 year old - no matter how legal she is to sleep with. And I'm sorry, I'm not sure that I see "oh but these women just throw themselves at them" as a particularly good defence in any circumstances. If the players can't manage to keep their dicks in their pants, then perhaps the clubs should consider player lockdowns and hire women to come in and service them? It would certainly reduce the number of scandals, that's for sure.
It's certainly been a vivid demonstration of the nature of digital technology, and how impossible it is to control information or images once they're out there. Wonder if it'll lead to any behavioural change, or, come to that, legal change. The poll on The Age website had 56% in favour of legal changes to legislation relating to digital images - I'm still not sure that it is possible to control something that's gone viral.
I laughed at Ruby Rose's comment about the Nick Riewoldt photo though - ''Wow all anyone keeps showing me at the 360 party is Nick Riewoldts penis. I dont want to see it again!!''
You and me both actually. Or "at all" in my case.
[1] the comments about who has legal ownership of the photos spring out.
