This time questions from [livejournal.com profile] ang_grrr:

1. The internet was never commercially developed... what would you be doing with your time?

Working. And spending a lot more time in the library doing journal article requests! I don't actually use the internet that much at home, mostly I do a quick download of mail and LJ and that's about it. (Then again, to do more would require forcing Dean away from the computer and would eat into my Civ:call to power playing time.) Most of my internet is at work, some of it even work-related. Were there no internet, I'd probably have my lab book up to date for starters.

2. Is the Red Dwarf movie ever going to be made?

Currently I'm thinking yes, but only because of the pre-production starting on the Gold Coast in May thing. Ask me again during May as to whether it's actually happened or not. Unfortunately if it is made I don't think it's going to be very good, but that's a whole other can of worms.

3. How is your foot feeling now?

It's almost back to normal size, which is nice. Mostly it's fine, but my tendon is still extremely stiff and stretching it hurts like hell. Unfortunately I still need to stretch it as otherwise I can't run properly. The other side of the "mostly" is that it gets sore after a lot of walking, mostly around the joint where it's still a bit bruised. I'm still supposed to be having a CT scan to check whether I've done something internally, but the physio's a lot happier with it now than he was two weeks ago. Two weeks ago I was finding it very hard to walk barefoot and the joint was stiffening up overnight, making it difficult to walk in the morning. Now I can put my foot down when I first get up, although I still have trouble remembering exactly how to walk when I'm half-asleep and my knees are sore because I'm still putting too much stress through them rather than through the ankle. But I'm not walking on the balls of my feet first thing now, which is good. It's getting there. And if our netball team does a Steven Bradbury[1] and gets in the finals next Monday I'll be playing. Just very slowly.

4. You've (hard) cheese in the fridge, unopened, but a day past it's sell-by-date. Do you open it and eat it? If yes, do you eat it a week past? What date would you not eat the cheese?

Open it, sniff it, do a bit of a visual and if it looks/smells OK I'll eat it. I tend not to notice dates unless there's something off about the product and then I'll check to see how old it is. If it's been opened I'll generally check just in case, although I managed to finish off a dip that apparently was three months old the other day. Dean is the opposite, he throws things out if they're a minute past their use-by date. Occasionally if the use-by date is close even.

5. The suffrist movement didn't happen and is only just blowing in a century later. What would you be doing? Would you be campaigning for the vote and other rights?

Probably, although it's difficult to say. Assuming the other culture changes - notably working after marriage and general acceptance of living together before marriage - didn't happen, at this stage it is very likely that I'd have married Dean about 3 years ago and would probably have started reproducing quite soon after that. I'm assuming 3 years ago, simply because at that stage I would have finished my thesis (and career.) But then again, without the vote, would I have gotten as far as finishing high school, let alone further education? Realistically, I probably would have left school at 15, maybe gone to the equivalent of TAFE and gotten a secretarial position from where I would have gotten married. If I had done tertiary education I would almost certainly have ended up a teacher.

I would like to think that I would have been campaigning, and if I were as I am now then definitely I would have been[2]. But I doubt my family upbringing would have been quite so left/liberal without my parents having lived through the culture changes of the 60s.

Having said that of course I managed to miss the anti-war march last Valentines Day (totally didn't know about it) and I haven't been active in Amnesty for a number of years. I don't visit Maribynong detention centre, generally write to MPs or chain myself to trees in old growth forests. I do sometimes sign petitions, but not if they're harrassing me in Bourke St Mall. And that's with earning my own money, being financially independent and having no current dependents (not even a cat). So how active I would be in the situation of having children and/or being financially dependent on someone who may well be opposed to such liberal matters? Quite probably I'd not rock the boat. Although I'd happily write anonymous leaflets. :-)

[1]The team may be in the finals because another team has dropped out. To quote Roy and HG over the Stephen Bradbury gold medal: "all it took was all the other blokes to fall down three times and we've won the gold!"
[2] Some of the "golden boys" here are beginning to annoy the hell out of me. It's amazing how much further some people will take you in this job if you're male than female. Not work or ability based, simply chromosomal. And birthright, naturally. And not just here. Having said that though, the furthest I've seen someone be taken was based solely on the person being married to a senior union organiser. Although according to them it was because they were a "hard worker". Amazing what fear of strikes can do to people.

THE RULES!
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed
6 - Personally I was just interested in what my questions would be, so feel no need to take this any further.
