So we drew the soccer. We were leading 3-2 up to the last nine seconds, when they managed a lucky goal. We didn't quite manage to reply in the remaining two seconds although [livejournal.com profile] epideme gave it a good try.

But, we've finished in the top four which means we'll be playing sudden death finals next week. Fun.

Our current aim, and that of another team we get on well with, is to knock the team that both of us dislike out of the finals as early as possible. Here's hoping! ;-)

Unfortunately it'll probably come down to the wire though...

Mandy played a second game after our game as a fill in and scored a hat trick! Damn, couldn't she have done that during our game? ;-) I think she should probably stay forward and Kirsten and I will do hovering and defence.

Last night was also the first time I played without taping my ankle, which meant I wasn't tackling as energetically as usual. The ankle is mostly fine, although still sore around the joint. Still slightly swollen as well. But I'm down to visiting the physio every month instead of bi-weekly now, which is good (and much cheaper!) I'm also supposed to start training fully again now... which means getting up when the alarm goes off. Predictably I didn't manage that this morning. ;-)

Netball is also coming up to finals. I think we're coming third on that ladder too.. we won 11-1 last week, mostly due to the other team's inability to get anything past Nick (aka Spiderman/Inspector Gadget).

Today is officially a public holiday, but not one that Monash takes, so I'm at work. On the benefit side, it's very, very quiet. The trip to work took 20 mins, less than half the usual time. Unfortunately the trip home is going to suck, what with all the people coming back from down the coast. From the traffic heading out at 3pm on Friday I'm guessing it'll be close to normal peak hour. I might even spend the $5 and take the tollway to avoid it...

Dean's off in Birchip with his parents cleaning up his Nana's house. He should be back tonight - wonder what mood he'll be in. *grin* Originally the plan was for him and his father to go up straight after his father closed the office on Saturday, which would have meant them leaving at about 12.30pm and getting to Birchip at about 4pm. Then Dean's Mum decided to go too, which meant that they didn't actually leave until 2pm, or get to Birchip until 7pm (they stopped in Charlton to get some stuff along the way).

Not at all surprisingly they've ended up staying 2 nights instead of the original 1 up there. Well not surprisingly to me at least. Dean seemed surprised when he phoned yesterday, can't think why. Hope he took enough undies. ;-)

So what was I doing while Dean's been up north? Not a lot actually, and most of it's been cleaning. At least the kitchen is now pretty close to as clean as it's going to get. I still need to go through and defrost the fridge and freezer though, which might be next weekend's job. And vacuum the entire house. Honestly, never live in a plastered house. Everywhere gets so dusty so quickly. And there's cobwebs everywhere. Bah. Humbug.

I watched all of "Angels in America" over last week. Interesting, I'd like to read the original play. As one reviewer put it, with a 6 hour format it ends up being slightly overblown though, with some dialogue coming across as very pretentious (if not portentous). Al Pacino was fantastic - probably one of the best roles I've ever seen him play. Very, very scary character. It was interesting to revisit the sense of doom which was around with the beginning of the epidemic though. When young men seemed to be dying like flies of strange diseases and giant quilts covered parks. I went to see part of the Melbourne quilt at Melbourne uni in 1991. My dance teacher from Ky was on it. Until then I didn't know he'd died of the disease, although I did know he was sick. Somewhere between 1988 (when I heard) and 1991 we lost touch with the people who were still in contact with him.

Trying to pick who Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson were playing was interesting too... not entirely sure about the sex with an angel though. Especially given that Prior was gay - I dunno, I just thought that the angel should have been less obviously female for starters.

One thing that struck me about Prior and Louis's characters was how little family support they seemed to have. Even Joe, whose mother came all the way from Salt Lake City to try and find out what was "wrong" with him and whose father had apparently abandoned him, had more family support. It was sad.

The character that I ended up feeling the most sorry for, and who didn't really seem to get any closure at the end of the story, was Joe. No family - his mother seemed to be getting on quite well with Prior, Louis and Belize though - no wife (who understandably left him to find her own path) and apparently no lover. Closeted for so long and then being abandoned when he finally was true to himself. And one of the most complex characters in the play: closeted, uncloseted, Mormon - and true to his faith - Republican, married, and a mixture of many things. Not a Roy Cohn in the making - the fact that he didn't take up the Washington post was indicative of that, as was his faith - but, finally, a gay Republican Mormon. Of all the characters I wondered where he went the most. And whether his mother accepted him as who he actually was.

I did like one of the bitchier comments the story ended on though: "It's January 1990, and I've been living with AIDS for five years. Which is 6 months longer than I lived with Louis..."
