hnpcc19. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.
A very enjoyable book. One of the few major book prize nominees I've read this year too. I also really enjoy books that can take you into another body, and this book gave me a real sense of what it could be like to be autistic in the modern world. Worth reading.
20. Demons and Angels, by Dan Brown.
I originally started this at my partner's parent's place, but had to give it back when we left (it was an overdue library book). Initially I found it really exciting, but it kind of lost the excitment (and the plot) towards the end. And I had major issues with one of the main events towards the end of the novel, which just didn't make sense to me. It was a fun read.
21. Incompetence, by Rob Grant.
A very patchy novel - parts of it had me laughing hysterically, parts had me going "this really needs a rewrite". Overall I enjoyed it (much more than his last effort, whatever the hell that was called) although the basic premise didn't really work for me. Minor incompetences I understand, but realistically you can't have people landing aircraft at the wrong cities, society just doesn't work like that. And honestly Rob, look up what Tourette's syndrome actually is, or more importantly, isn't. Pet peeve I admit, but still. I mostly enjoyed it.
22. This is Sweden Calling, by Des Mangan.
A history of the Eurovision song contest, with year by year descriptions and appendicies of entries and scores. Great fun. Needs more pictures though (having seen the picture of Cliff Richard dressed as Austin Powers somewhere else I agree that mere words are inadequate to describe it). And preferably a soundtrack. :-) And Fud Leclerc is a great name for a James Bond villian... The 2003 chapter is the only truly fanboy chapter (about what you'd expect for the first one he actually got to go to - and as a real media person too!) and there was probably a little too much description of some of the female contestants in it. Other than that - a good overview with pretty much every question you ever had about Eurovision answered. Except maybe "how the hell did that get in?!?"

Date: 2004-06-16 06:21 am (UTC)I think if we're truely honest with ourselves we can answer that question without any help. Mostly we prefer not to because if we do we then have trouble looking our species in the eye for some time afterwards.
