Dec. 31st, 2003 10:39 amLast day of the year already?!!
Shit, that went quick[1].
I have no idea at this stage what I'm doing tonight. Normally other people[2] have parties and invite us, but this year that hasn't happened. All the other people are OS, IS or working, dammit. Or have had children and are finding parties too much of a hassle. Or just hate me. ;-)
So at the moment there's us and BundyChris who are going to meet up and do something. Maybe go down the Yarra and see the fireworks. Or down Lygon St. Or.. I dunno really. We'll think of something.
Meanwhile, it's hot. Not as hot as yesterday, and definitely not as blowy though. Yesterday was 40oC with hot northerlys. Today's back down to about 28oC, no wind. Hottest December on record.
Looks like another interesting fire season to come.
I don't know. Fires wouldn't worry me so much but for so many of them being deliberately lit. Monday night we went up to Dean's nana's place for her birthday (94!) and on the way up Plenty Rd saw the remains of a grass fire. Just near the road, you understand. On the way back there were 2 CFA trucks and an unmarked police car putting out a fire... which hadn't been there when we were on the way up. There is no way that that was not deliberately lit. I don't understand the mentality of people who want/need to do this. It's fire, be careful.
I understand fire from lightning strikes - this time last year we were coming back off the Alpine Road, and stopped in Paynesville. Both towards Lakes Entrance (east) and towards
Sale (west) you could see heavy black clouds, with lightning flashing in them rolling from the mountains out to sea. Where we were stayed completely dry. It was beautiful, in a bizarre and very sultry way.
Then of course we drove through Sale on the way home and got hit by the full force of the storm - and minor flash flooding.
This year though, we've not really been anywhere, although if the forecast for New Year's Day is accurate I'm dragging Dean down the coast for the day. I miss the sea.
[1] OK, quickly. It's an adverb.
[2]the only New Years party I organised was very quiet, so I leave it up to other people now.

Date: 2003-12-31 04:52 pm (UTC)I love the beach. *sigh* This year I'll get there.
Do I worry about bushfires? Well no, given where I live. They'd have taken out a large chunk of suburbia before they got anywhere near me.

Date: 2004-01-01 01:30 am (UTC)But then again we'd all be dead from the burning/concussion thing already, so I guess it wouldn't matter. ;-)
