Well, they use those spa footbath things (which really are like mini hottubs) to soften your skin so they can push back the cuticles on your toenails and pumice off any rough spots on your feet. Generally doctors advise against getting them because of the difficulty of cleaning the footbaths properly (and because it takes so long to do it that most salons just plain don't), but they say that if you're going to get them anyway, make sure you don't shave your legs for at least 2 days previous (though what woman who's image-conscious enough to get pedicures would go that long?).
In any case, it's a lot cheaper and safer to do the same thing at home in a warm bath. Or if smooth feet isn't important to you, just a pair of clippers. ^_~
