Storm of the Millenium (part 1)
Feb. 3rd, 2005 03:43 pmSo I slept through the storms.
I did notice how soggy the ground was this morning though - where the tree in the front yard used to be was a large puddle, the ground much too wet to absorb any more water.
For some reason I didn't click that this meant that there had a been a lot of rain until I hit the Exhibition St extension and saw the Yarra River.
Oh. My. God.
It had risen and covered both bike paths, and was about half a metre away from bursting its banks. Apparently in Southbank it did burst its banks and flooded bits of the casino.
It was even more trippy as the Exhibition St extension runs alongside the Yarra for about half a km, and the water felt like it was nearly up to the road. Hopefully I can convince Dean we should go take some photos tonight, because I've seriously never seen it this high before.
Melbourne apparently had about 120mm of rain in 24 hours, with more forecast tonight. Whether I make it into work tomorrow may well depend on whether I can find an unflooded route to get there by! Currently there are flood warnings out on (as far as I can tell) every waterway in Melbourne. I'm glad I'm on top of a hill.. not that that'll do much if a tree comes down, but still. I'm less likely to be flooded.
I did have to laugh last night in the supermarket though: the woman in front of me at the checkout had, it transpired, arrived in Australia two days ago. So day one was 37oC and stinking hot, and day two was 13oC and pouring rain.
"So what do you think of Australia?" asked the checkout chick.
Surprisingly she didn't give any "wtf is this weather?! Is it always like this?!" answers, preferring to go with "it's very nice."
