So we've made it up the Newell, overnighting in Dubbo, and are now in BrisVegas crashing on [livejournal.com profile] droxina's floor. Well her spare bed actually, but you know what I mean.

And Brisbane's huge! And it's developed a cafe culture and nightlife since the last time I was here! Dean and I have spent all day wandering around the CBD and the Queensland museum (found AussieChris' aggressive tortoise again), getting lost, drinking coffee and all the other stuff you do when you're on holiday. Contrary to advertised promises the weather has been mostly overcast rather than "perfect the next". It's warm overcast though, so I'm not really complaining.

It's great. :-)

And so green! After coming up the Newell, which is bone dry in places, Brisbane is a positive explosion of tropical greenery. Lush banana palms. Huge snapdragon-y kind of plants. Mangroves. (No crocodiles, thank God.) Moreton bay figs. A million different shades of green.

We knew that it was wetter here on the other side of the Great Dividing Range, but it really hits home when pretty much every creek you've crossed has been dry, every river has been a trickle, the sheep are the colour of the dust and you haven't seen a dam with water in for over 200 km.

And the farmers near Ipswich were sowing (by night, with tractor lights) - unlike the paper we'd read in Dubbo, which said that most farmers weren't bothering to sow because the ground was too dry. Presumably rain's either been forecast or they're gambling that it'll come again up here. And also the hailstorm must have hit them last week.

It's been a full moon this last couple of days too, which has meant that the wildlife is out feeding at night. This in turn means that we've seen a hell of a lot of roadkill on the way up: the worst was when we detoured through the Warrumbungle National Park and had a roadkill:live animal ratio of 6:1. I wasn't holding out much hope for the lone 1 either, given that we saw it next to a road...

Poor roos. I still hope the moon wanes by the time we're heading south again though. Searching the roadside shadows for movement is very tiring after a while.

We're planning on heading further north in the next couple of days.

We also saw Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - loved it. :-)

I'm on holidays! [BOMP]

"now in BrisVegas crashing on droxina's floor"

And a very nice floor it is too!

Very tactful of you not to mention the fact that you nearly had to sleep in a tent in my backyard because Dean is allergic to cats (of which I have three).

Next time you come up, give me about three to six months warning so I can take a contract position that won't require ridiculous working hours during your visit and I will actually have some time to catch up with you!

BTW - it wasn't that I didn't want to hug you goodbye, but I didn't quite know what the etiquette is re: hugging a friend's fiance when he's only dressed in a towel...

So, *HUGS*
