We had a party for the World Cup last night. It was great - 8 of us, all huddled around the TV (with the exception of Dean, who really doesn't get it). 3 barracking for Brazil, 3 for Germany, 3 don't knows and a "5-4 on penalties". "Yeah but who?" "Doesn't matter - I'm going for 5-4 on penalties." And it was a good match (unlike 1990). And it was in our timezone. And because all of us (again, except Dean) had just played soccer beforehand, we felt able to wildly criticise and critique everything from the playing and the goalkeeping to Richard Gere (Germany's coach) and Peter Garrett (the ref, AKA DEATH). And of course Channel 9's coverage - give it back to SBS you bastards!! Or at least let Les Murray and Johnny Warren do the commentary!
Speaking of soccer, I really took out one of the opposition players. As a result I have quite bad bruising on my legs and chest - but given that she strained a tendon I think I was lucky. It was accidental (yeah, really!) - both of us went for the ball, neither of us backed off and my flexed knee hit her standing knee. Ouch. I got the ball though.. mostly cos she fell down and couldn't get up again.

This morning I started my new job. Apart from getting lost while trying to find the HR building (for some strange reason I was expecting it to be on the Uni campus. Nup) things went pretty well. I spent most of the day reading up what I will be doing and trying to get up to speed on a subject I know nothing about. And - of course - trying to find the person who was supposed to give me building keys, and who was never in their office. I finally found them at about 4.45pm. I'm working with plants and mice. Neither of which I've ever done before. Steep learning curve all round I feel. Still... it felt nice to have a red lab workbook and a white lab coat again. :-)
