OK, now I'm just spamming. :-)

We went to see A Lot Like Love on the weekend, which I really enjoyed. Just browsing the IMDB entry though, there are some seriously strangely (self?)named people out there. Sam Pancake? Moon Bloodgood? What?

Anyway, it's a nice film with characters that I recognised (and in some cases appear to have shared houses with). They had better New Years parties though, probably comes from being in LA rather than Melbourne.

The week before we went to see Star Wars III:Revenge of the Sith. I quite enjoyed the film, although I thought Padme got an incredibly raw deal as a character - all she got to do in this film was wander about looking sad pretty much. She also had a bizarrely appearing/disappearing pregnancy[1], which bugged me quite a lot. Not nearly as much as the:

"We're losing her - we'll have to operate"
"PUSH!"[2]

sequence did though. Heh. Those babies were also full term, when realistically (given the sizes of her pregnancy) they should have been dead. But still, maybe they force[3] grew them or something. That was the main thing that bugged me about the film - comes of having too many friends with small children I think.

The thing that made me go "wow" was the level of betrayal by the clones mid-film though. One order and they go from fighting alongside you to shooting you in the back. It was just an absolutely stunning betrayal for me. The bit with Darth Vader killing the children was also terrible, even though you really didn't see that much of it (fortunately). It was ruined a bit for AussieChris by the use of the term 'younglings' though: what is wrong with 'children' exactly?[4] Or even Padawan (although I suppose that could be a specific term, who knows.)

What I really liked about the film was that if you hadn't seen parts IV-->VI then it really could have gone either way. I still held out a smidgen of hope that perhaps Annakin wouldn't turn, perhaps it could all be avoided, despite knowing exactly what was going to happen. And the fight scenes were good - but I would have liked more of the explanation of the Rebel Alliance beginnings, which was apparently cut from the film. (This would also have given Padme something better to do than mooning, giving birth and carking it.)

I did like Obi-Wan being given postgraduate training by correspondance though. Heh. "While you're marooned on Tatooine being bored stiff by the sand and locals, continue training with your dead mentor and me. It'll give you something to do at least." Heh.

Overall it was a good watch. I may even go and see it again.

[1] The running out of the spaceship was... interesting. And she definitely wasn't pregnant while running. Not that I blame her, I wouldn't be pregnant while running either. But from a continuity standpoint and a pregnancy standpoint - what?!? Didn't you tell the CGI guys she was supposed to be pregnant?
[2]I cracked up laughing in the film at this point. Seriously, George, which part of 'operate' is 'push' exactly?
[3]Bada-ching! OK, bad pun.
[4] Actually speaking of, this is not a film I would take children to see. Didn't stop half the parents in the film with us though. We had a small (3-4 year old) child running up and down the aisles at one point. I dunno, I just felt it was a bit too violent for small children as reflected by the M rating.

We also saw HHGTTG up in Brisbane, which was great. I don't know, I just took it as being another wierd addition to the family as it were. There were bits I liked better in the books/TV, bits I liked better in the movie (Trillian. Can't stand Sandra Dickinson's voice in the TV series) and there's probably some bits I liked better from the radio series (but it's been quite a while since I heard/read those so I can't quite think of what I'm meaning at the moment). I loved the opening song, but I did get a tear in my eye when the original music started up for the opening credits.

We're going to another film (don't know what yet) next week. In case you're wondering why [livejournal.com profile] epideme it's because we got tickets for Christmas and they expire at the end of the month. So we're cramming them all in in one go.

I suggest Batman Begins for next week, if your tickets allow it (it'll be on the no free list, of course).

I...well, I hated Revenge of the Sith, but I'll confine myself to the two moments that completely ruined everything. First was Obi-Wan not just defeating Anakin by cutting off his arms and legs and having him catch fire (overkill for starters), but leaving his supposed "brother" and student to die horribly this way rather than doing the decent thing and cutting his head off. Totally blew the character for me, I mean you could say he was angry, but he's a Jedi and that was just plain cruel (not to mention it meant he survived).

The other one was using Darth Vader for that cheesiest of all cinematic cliches, the "Noooooooooo!" I couldn't believe it. The force anger thing was fine, it was the pull out while screaming "Noooooooo!" I couldn't handle.

As for Hitchiker's, yeah, I loved it. I liked nearly everything, some bits better than the radio series (Trillian definitely), and only really felt disappointed by Mos Def's Ford, who fell pretty flat (he's always been a favourite character).

Hehe, yeah I noticed that too!! :) And I was equally shocked by the betrayal of the clones, I thought it was all (surprisingly) depicted extremely well.
