Netball

I really enjoy playing netball. I started playing in 1981, when I was in grade 3. In the 22 years since I have played almost every year, and in every possible position. I'm at my best in WA and WD - height and fitness combined see to that - but I can shoot badly and I played defence for about 3 years, before everyone else grew too tall. Up until I started working nights in 2000, I was playing with and running a women's team (Gelf) and a mixed team (Freakazoid). Gelf folded about 6 months after I left (too difficult for most people to keep making the time and venue) but Freakazoid is still going strong on Thursday nights. So it was with great joy that I discovered two weeks ago that my RDO was on a Thursday - I could play a game!! First this season!! Yay!!

Home from uni I came, found my skirt neatly shoved into the back of the cupboard, found my sneakers under the bed, found a clean totally white t-shirt (not mine, Dean's), found trakky daks, found sports socks, got changed, stretched and generally reminded myself of the rules. Rang another player who lives nearby to see if he wanted a lift down, picked him up, drove down to Richmond in the freezing rain, chattering about Star Wars and the like.

Got to the venue 25 minutes early - lots of time to warm up and generally remind myself of useful things like how high the ring is, where the lines are, how big 3 feet is, how to obstruct without the umpires seeing you etc - and ran into the umpire/organiser who said:

"Didn't Chris ring you?"
"Huh?"
"Mo-fos have forfeited. You've won!"
"but...but... but..."

Bugger.
