May. 31st, 2002 04:40 pmI finally got to play netball last night. We lost by 5, but we only had 5 players to the other team's 7, so I think we did OK. I'm quite tired this morning. I actually played 1 and a quarter games as Mo-Fos (who were playing after us) were short. Their missing players turned up a bit late. Hopefully I'll be able to play next week as well.
It was a really fun game. The only problem with the umpiring was the persistent 'replay' calls - when the player hasn't waited for the opposing player to come and stand next to them or hasn't moved forward to where the umpire has indicated, then they switch the call and give the ball to the opposition. This is annoying on two counts. You frequently can't hear the umpires (it's a mixed comp, and we're usually all yelling - including any spectators that happen to be around) and the times when the player actually stops because they thought they heard the umpire is the one time the umpire wasn't saying anything and they get done for holding the ball. (Happened twice last night). You've got whistles guys - use them!
On another sporting front, the World Cup starts tonight. Finally, a Cup where I'm not getting up at 4am to watch the final. Yay!!! First and last time it'll be in my timezone I think - the minute FIFA works out just how bad it is for either Europe or South America it'll be back in those timezones. On that basis I expect Africa will be hosting soon. :-)
