Apr. 8th, 2006 10:37 amGo to Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/). Type in your birth date (but not year). List three events that happened on your birthday. List two important birthdays and one interesting death. Post this in your journal.
OK.
Events
* 763 BC - Assyrians record a solar eclipse that will be used to fix the chronology of Mesopotamian history.
* 1215 - King John of England puts his seal to the Magna Carta.
* 1667 - The first human blood transfusion is administered by Dr. Jean Baptiste. He transfuses 12 fluid ounces (350 ml) of sheep blood to a 15-year-old boy. The boy later dies and Baptiste is accused of murder.
Ouch, ouch, ouch. Manchester was also bombed in 1996 on this day, which I'd forgotten about - or more accurately thought was a day later (when I heard about it it was!)
Births
* 1330 - Edward the Black Prince, Prince of Wales (d. 1376)
* 1914 - Yuri Andropov, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (d. 1984)
Death
* 1381 - Wat Tyler, English rebel
It was a toss up between him and Ella Fitzgerald actually.
And for curiosity, here's Dean's:
Events
* 1854 - Eureka Stockade: In what is claimed by many to be the birth of Australian democracy, more than 20 goldminers at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia are killed by state troopers in an uprising over mining licences.
* 1984 - Bhopal Disaster: A methyl isocyanate leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, kills more than 3,800 people outright and injures 150,000-600,000 others (some 6,000 of whom would later die from their injuries) in one of the worst industrial disasters in history.
* 1989 - Cold War: In a meeting off the coast of Malta, US President George H. W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev release statements indicating that the cold war between their nations may be coming to an end (some commentators from both nations exaggerated the wording and independently declared the Cold War over).
(Do you know, I totally don't remember the last one? I think I was still recovering from year 12 exams.)
Births
* 1857 - Joseph Conrad, Polish-born British writer (d. 1924)
* 1948 - Ozzy Osbourne, British singer
Something about hearts and darkness happening on that date then..?
Death
* 1894 - Robert Louis Stevenson, British writer (b. 1850)
