Netball finals for the mixed comp started last night. Despite our somewhat horrendous season, we still came in fourth and made the finals. Sheesh, what do you have to do to miss out around here?!? Anyway, so we were playing at 9pm.

As it turned out, another team that I've semi-regularly filled in for had also made their final (different division) and were playing at 7.40pm. When we turned up to play last week, one of their players was lying down with ice on her ankle crying with pain. So I ended up filling in for them last night as well.

The first game was fun. We all played together fairly well, and I managed to play on, and defend reasonably successfully, a big, boofy guy. Normally I can't defend big, boofy guys that well, not least because all they need to do is throw higher and I can't get the ball. For some reason that didn't click with his team mates every time, and I was able to intercept quite a few passes. He was quicker than me (I've actually yet to meet a guy who isn't actually) but was also much less fit (which was surprising - I tend to assume I'm the least fit person on the court). We ended up winning 18-10.

The next game was also fun, with only a few minor frustrations (don't try to throw over the tall, jumpy guy!!!) We played the team we'd played the week before, and had lost 10-11 to. Only this time, because it was a final, they only had 6 eligible players. We on the other hand had a full team plus two subs (which was great, because when I started to crash at half time I could go off and score). We won, 19-11 - it was a shame actually that they didn't have a full team as the game would have been a lot closer (although we probably would have lost).

So next week we play the loser of 1 vs 2, which would be Ringleaders. I think we've played Ringleaders in a final every season for about three years now actually. Some we've won, some we've lost... this one we'll probably lose, based on the season to date. But as last night proved, nothing is certain. The only draw-back to winning would be that if we do, we get to play the undefeated team, who thumped Ringleaders 32-4 last night. Hm.

I'm absolutely buggered today though.

...only a few minor frustrations...
including the 1 second "Held Balls" and the GD snatching the ball out of Marcus's hands, and the incredible number of toss-ups and our inability to FACE THE BALL and their centre starting each pass with one foot in and one foot out, and their GA's inventive interpretation of "stepping."

Yes.

But it was good to be running around again, and my injured lip will hopefully heal before I have to play my trombone again.
