My suburb appears to be running a giant trash and treasure swapmeet.

It's hard rubbish collection, of course.

What the council does is tell everyone a date a week before they plan to pick it all up. That gives everyone a chance to wander round the suburb finding bits they'd like and making off with them. It also means the council has less to actually take.

About 2/3 of the street has "one cubic metre"[1] of hard rubbish on their front lawn. (We do too, but most of that's from the bus passengers who drop litter in front of our house.) The chest of drawers across the road went very quickly (wasn't a bad piece that) and most of the whitegoods have moved on. It's only the mattresses left now. For some reason no one wants a second hand trash and treasure mattress.

And all around the place there are people cruising slowly in cars, ready to leap out and grab whatever looks salvagable.

[1] It's very hard to fit a mattress into 1 cubic metre. I think that figure is a guide, averaged over the entire suburb, as there are some people with their entire nature strip covered
