Usual first line of first post of the month meme:

Happy New Year! We're almost entirely in the new house, only a few things left in the old house. 6 weeks ago I ordered a freezer. So, conference. You know, up till now I really hadn't realised it was possible to cyberstalk people via Entrez. The postdoc's got a project going that's part of a multi-country, multi-centre study. This article in The Age is making me laugh. I think this may be why they limit the numbers of dancers on Eurovision. Aka, what I did on my weekend. "So I’m not being petty/ devisory/ mean or whatever, actually I’m trying to keep the peace..." So we are nearly moved. Despite what it looks like from reading my recent journal, I did actually do some other things besides the Urban Max in the three-four days we were in Sydney.

Heh, that looks disturbingly like I spend my weekends dancing badly!

And the last sentence of the last post of the month now:

Got keys yesterday, now to start moving! It's probably safe to come out now. And of course I made the mistake of phoning people on the weekend and confirming I had a full team... only to come in to two e-mails from people who injured themselves on the weekend and can't play tonight. If anything starts going dodgy on my credit card at least I know where to point the bank/police to start looking. As always. Pretty autumn flowers though. And yay, the days are getting longer and it's mostly light when I leave work. Go for your lives. Is there something the Hadron Collider people should be telling us? Want to go home now... I know, weird dreams. And finally... braaiiinnss!!!

What amused me the most about both selections was that none of the training posts got in. So it only looked like they were taking over my journal, really!

A quick wrap up of 2008:

The Good:

*We moved house. OK, still unpacking, but getting there (slowly).
*I got marginally fitter and thinner (although it's probably wearing off again now!)
*My work and health were fairly good actually.
*Other than me wanting to kill people on a week to week basis I enjoyed playing netball and soccer! And - bonus - I passed the organisation of the mixed team on to someone else!
*Two new nieces, to add to the one I had at the start of the year.

The Bad:

*Dean's health, on the other hand, sucked. 5 months on crutches after the knee injury, and still re-building muscle in that leg. Something that looks like it'll continue for a fair while yet, given that he has one very scrawny and one normal leg.
*The 5 months on crutches thing also meant we really didn't manage to have many holidays. One night at a B&B, 3 nights in Sydney. I'm certainly hoping next year is better for travel!
*Dean's work year was pretty feral. To say the least.
*This HR thing at my work isn't fantastic either, but at least I can run away from it!

So next year - resolutions and hopes:

*Continue with the marginally thinner and fitter thing. Only less on the marginal and more on the actually visible to someone other than just Dean.
*Con someone into running the women's team for at least a season.
*Go to Europe. Yes, I've been saying this for quite a few years now. And if Dean can manage to stay off crutches (please God) then we should be able to make it next year, financial crisis or no financial crisis. Of course I'm betting on (a) getting a contract extension to the end of the year at least (it currently finishes mid-June), and (b) Dean's work not being completely stupid again. Oh, and (c) not managing to injure myself either. Oh yeah, and money and the $A staying at least a tad stable (go up again damn you! Up!) and stuff, which I'm kind of ignoring mostly.
*Either way, there'll be some kind of resolution on various fronts. For or against, we should at least have some idea where things are going and be able to make some decisions. I hope.
*Hopefully I'll be doing this MPH thing, assuming I haven't completely stuffed up the University enrolment system. Still, I'll find that out on Monday I presume. Which will also play into travel timing, something else that I'm completely ignoring! (Me, I'm great on the feigning ignorance side of things...)
*Seeing as I can't win the Mixed Racing Category of the Urban Max with [livejournal.com profile] astrocave in Melbourne (dammit) we'll just have to go to Brisbane and try there. And now that [livejournal.com profile] kirstenfleur's given me a Sydways with bus routes listed for Christmas I can try and at least finish within the 6 hours in Sydney!!
*Or of course I can also try and con [livejournal.com profile] astrocave into doing the Nokia City Chase in Melbourne as well. Or instead, but I'd prefer as well. ;-) [livejournal.com profile] astrocave?
*I have an almost three page list of house stuff which I won't bore you with here. It starts with putting up shelving so we can put the books away, continues with fix the light which hasn't worked since we've moved in and then goes into a lot of unpacking stuff. I am determined to reduce the amount of stuff and number of boxes we have sitting around. And get an outdoor table.
*I have about three creative projects going that I should finish. And two that I should start.

So anyway - here's to 2009, and to everyone having a happy and peaceful year. I'd wish for a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the middle east, the DRC and Zimbabwe but I think I should probably keep things realistic (*sigh*). Still best wishes to everyone and see you in the new year.

And finally... braaiiinnss!!!

Ugh, I know what you mean. I hope that perhaps with Obama in charge that he might wield some control over the situation (moreso than the Bush administration has over Israel etc) but we'll have to wait and see...

I'm glad that you had a good year overall, apart from the HR situation and health problems. But I really hope that things in that regard get much better soon - and hope you have a fab 2009!

Nokia City Chase, eh? It does have a few benefits over Urban Max, including the fact that it supports charities. Oh, and it's actually on. That helps.
