The smog is now so thick I can't see the Lysterfield smoke.

It's also heading quite quickly to the 37oC maximum.

So it's hot and smoky. Joy.

So far NSW, Vic, Qld, ACT, Tas, WA and I think SA have fires happening. Is NT the only one out?

And the fireworks for the long weekend have been cancelled in Melb. :-)

The fireworks scheduled for both Sydney and Queanbeyan have been cancelled too. Canberra has been warned to prepare for the worst. The weather is expected to worsen this weekend. If so it's possible the fires will demonstrate their own brand of fireworks. I can only hope not.

I did a driving holiday through the cascades and the rockies once and we were chased by fires the whole way. The devastation was awful, even on that 'modest' scale. I shall pray for rain, [yeah big help that] and hope that things dont get any worse.
I find it totally perplexing people's thoughtlessness at times like this. [during the recent firefighter strikes, there were people doing hoax calls.] Humanity is a puzzle, its a lack of responsibilty i think. Pffttt. Hope that your nearest and dearest stay safe.

Am crossing my fingers for you lot in Victoria now since it seems all the real action has moved south.

Yeah, which isn't great. 16 houses lost at last count and they're waiting to see if the two fire fronts join up. 125km long fire front... the mind boggles.

At least in the southern half of the state we've got the change come through and even some rain...

But the NSW and Canberra fires don't look great either - there was a soundbite with a frustrated CFA guy saying "it doesn't matter which way the wind goes - we've got problems whatever it does..."

Well it's over in the ACT for now. The emergency is officially over even though the fires aren't quite out. The final total was 530 houses in Canberra and the surrounding district destroyed. I can only hope we never go through that again.
