I did live through the 1990s. Somehow I managed to do it while only seeing 2 episodes total (one of which was the pilot) of Babylon 5. While being heavily involved in a science fiction club. A media science fiction club. Yeah I don't know how either.
Anyway. Dean has borrowed the DVD off a friend and so we've started from scratch.
The first thing that struck me about this is how very dated the CGI is. It was probably cutting edge back in 1993, but I watched Firefly recently and this CGI? Is very dated. Not that that's distracting me or anything.
The first two episodes (all that I've watched so far) have a really 1960s feel to them. I'm not entirely sure why, although everyone being white or latex covered (OK, there were two non-white extras in the background in one scene, and an African-possibly Asian American (he reminded me of Tiger Woods) turned up as a doctor in episode 2, probably after someone realised just how fluorescent the rest of the cast were) and Garibaldi (Edit: actually I think I have the character names mixed up. It's the other one I'm thinking of.) being a patriarchal Shatner-esque wanker probably didn't help. I really hope he improves because at the moment he's irritating the crap out of me. Claudia Christian's 'Russian' accent comes and goes (mostly goes), and it's amazing how having latex covering people's faces helps their acting ability ("you're sure no one will be able to recognise me? Sweet!")
Yeah, I know, early days. And by all accounts the appeal of Bab 5 is in the long term plot lines, rather than the acting. And the storyline for episode 2 ("Soul Hunter" - made me giggle, mostly because it reminded me of this movie "starring" Joe Estevez) was an improvement over episode 1 (still wondering why Ferengi turn up everywhere though. Let alone why anyone's still being taken in by that shuffling con.)
Will continue posting impressions as they come.
