The local papers are clutching at ever decreasing optimistic straws.

Today's headline:

"Kewell sent off; game drawn. Socceroos retain outside chance of making round of 16."

I think that's pretty much the same as Essendon's mathematical chance of making the finals the last couple of years, and about as likely.

And clicking through to the article gets:

AUSTRALIA still has a mathematical chance of progressing to the last 16 of the World Cup after it fought out a thrilling 1-1 draw with Ghana...

OK, we're screwed.

The “mathematical chance” would only be if Germany and Ghana keep each other to a scoreless draw, and Australia cane Serbia 5-0. That scoreline would be the only way to progress, beating Germany to second-in-group on goal difference.

I think it would be more accurate to describe these chances as “a million to one”. ;)

String along the hopes of the public much? :) It's a pity they got done 4-0 by Germany in the first game, but they deserved that score line and were lucky it wasn't more.
