More on Survivor (while I wait for this gel to finish):
Seasons with a higher female:male ratio in confessionals:
S16 Fans vs Favourites - four women, 1 man in the final five; confessional ratio 15.36:11.43
S15 China - four women, 1 man in the final five; confessional ratio 14.15:13.62
S9 Vanuatu - four women, 1 man in the final five; confessional ratio 16.14:14.43
S4 Marquesas - three women, 2 men in the final five; confessional ratio 18.46:16.38
Notice a pattern?
Interestingly there's one season (S11 Guatemala) where there were 4 women and 1 man in the final five, and the ratio was still in favour of the men (15.14:15.43) - weird, not least because one of the guys who got the most air time I remember as being really not that interesting, and the other one (who came third) I have no recollection of at all. Whereas I remember the final four women quite well.
It'd be interesting to break it down by age as well - the new season of Survivor is apparently going to be Younger (<30) vs Older (>40). The last time they tried something similar was S12 (Exile Island - shot in Panama), where they started with four teams of Younger Men (av age 26.25), Younger Women (av age 26.25), Older Men (av age 47.25) and Older Women (av age 39.75). They had a 32 year old on the "Older Women" team. Yeah, I'd be cut about that too. Especially when they put a 31 year old on the "Younger Women" team, heh.
Breaking it down by original designation the confessional ratio goes:
Younger Men: 2.60 confessionals/episode (finished 1st, 9th, 10th, 12th)
Younger Women: 2.58 confessionals/episode (finished 2nd, 6th, 8th, 14th)
Older Men: 2.72 confessionals/episode (finished 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th)
Older Women: 2.65 confessionals/episode (finished 4th, 13th, 15th, 16th). Pretty much all of the confessionals were from Cirie (average 4/episode) who came in 4th overall and bumped up the average a bit.
Hm, not as disparate as I was half-expecting, although the gender ratio (12.57 women: 16.00 men) kind of reflects the women (especially the "older" ones) being voted off early. (The 32 yo went out 2nd; the much younger 31 yo finished 6th.)
It'll be interesting to see how the new season pans out, although based on S12 I'd be guessing the average age of the women in the Older team is significantly younger than the average age of the men on that team. Because, you know, women go all saggy and unfit and stuff. Eeuw. (Or, based on Scout Cloud Lee who is - I think - the oldest woman (and one of the oldest people to have competed at all actually) at age 59, they go kind of nutty. Sometimes in a good way, but her at the time? Came across as more in a nutty way. Then again that entire season was kind of loopy actually. I still can't believe she came 3rd - FFS she had a knee injury the entire season!!! And she was irritating. Weird. Loopy.)
