Mar. 20th, 2003 06:16 pmSo it ended up being a bit of an odd day.
Lab meeting in the morning. A looooonnnngggg lab meeting.
And right in the middle R. farts really, really loudly.
Everyone reacted - except R.
So everyone ignored it, believing that they must of misheard it, until after the lab meeting when all of a sudden there were all these little groups going "Did R. fart?" "Yes, I thought so too". And then giggling lots for the rest of the day.
At 1pm S. asked if there was any news, so we pulled up a couple of news sites. At that stage there wasn't, but I did find the comment "The streets of Baghdad are deserted" pretty funny - name me a city where the streets aren't deserted at 5am. Impending war or no impending war. Same with "all the shops are shut". Er der Fred.
By 2pm, when I went over for a coffee, it was on. There were a whole group of people around a TV in the campus centre, which I initially thought was showing a graduation ceremony (there were a lot of people wandering around in robes, and they often sell videos of the ceremony at these things... it made more sense at the time). Then I realised that the video was showing daybreak and an outside scene (not often something you see at a graduation ceremony) and that it had the CNN text thing running across the bottom. *sigh* When we came back I asked S. if she'd looked it up recently, and she had.
Apparently (according to the news sites at least) people are now able to leave Baghdad (S. hadn't managed to get hold of her parents for the last couple of days, no phone lines) so with any luck everyone's heading for the equivalent of Geelong. Or Mildura.
Who knows what will happen next.
Apart from L'il Johnny addressing the nation tonight. I'm in two minds as to whether to watch. I might have to take all throwable objects out of the lounge room first, I think.
*sigh*
