We did eventually end up with a full team last night, after the dramas during the afternoon.

My luck held, right up to getting changed at Richmond, when Kirsten came in and said
"You're going to kill me. I've forgotten my sneakers".
"What?!? I knew we should have forfeited." ;-)

She was right. I was going to kill her. Especially as I'd just discovered that our spare boy was also working late and unable to make it, meaning that we only just had a team. Fortunately the umpire next to us, who was also changing, said "what size foot are you? I'm the same. Here, borrow my sneakers" which was very nice of her and meant that we did, in fact, have a full team. It also meant that the umpire was wearing white trakky daks with black boots for one game (luckily she wasn't umpiring until the second game) which is always a fetching look. She borrowed Kirsten's boots to wear as her own were knee high CFM boots, which would have been an even more distinctive look with trakkies.

The game itself can aptly be described as windy. (Cue Mendelson's Elijah : And a mighty wind/rent the mountains around/break in pieces the rocks/break them before the Lord/break them before the Lord..)

Ok, it wasn't quite mountain-breakingly windy, but there were a lot of passes that went sideways all of a sudden, or picked up speed unexpectedly or plummeted to earth much earlier than anticipated. Still. One of the perils of outdoor competition I suppose. At least it wasn't raining. :-)

I played GK, which would probably work better if I grew a foot upwards (instead of outwards as seems to be my current wont). I actually didn't go too badly, despite the player I was on being quite taller than me, probably because I kept intimidating her into accidentally going over the line. Their GA throwing passes that flew past her out of the court also helped. I managed not to re-injure my calf muscle, although both calves are sore today, probably because of the jumping. I jump less and run more in wings. I also pissed off their GA something shocking by sheparding a few balls that he'd lost out of court in such a way that he couldn't reach them. Hee. :-)

We ended up losing by 3, which mostly reflects our fourth quarter collapse when we all inexplicably chose to throw to the tallest player (who had three defenders on - usually - him) rather than the shorter person who was by themselves (usually female) and also to ignore what everyone else was doing and all run to the same place, making it easy to defend and intercept passes. *sigh* Sooner or later we'll stop doing that.

There was a story on the news yesterday about Australia having one of the world's highest sport-related injury rates. This is amusing given that we also have one of the world's highest obesity rates. What it is, of course, is people like me who appear on both lists and screw up the statistics. Go us sport-playing somewhat injury-prone fatties! ;-)
