Buffy finale
Oct. 13th, 2003 04:36 pmSo I finally managed to see the last 5 eps on the weekend.
I dunno. I have to say I like this version better. It was more emotional for me and the "right" person died. But as finales go, it wasn't too bad. Season 2 and 5 still are the ones that packed the most punch for me though, not least from having very strong story arcs to build on. This one was more a par on the season 4 arc, before they decided they didn't have enough funding to do all the episodes they wanted and wrapped up what was looking like a very promising storyline in one episode so they could go off and rabbit on about friendship and the first slayer and cheese and stuff.
I guess what irritated me a little was the lack of coherency about the final plan. And the blowing off of all previous ideas. And is it really a good idea to suddenly make unlimited numbers of girls superheroines? (I'm just saying. I know about the vote analogy, but I don't think that is necessarily relevant. Why not boys too? As the opening of series 1 showed, they're equally powerless against vampires, demons and the like. I don't buy that making some girls slayers is necessarily bringing girls overall to full equality, even in the Buffyverse.) And Giles was woefully underused again, and not evil like I was expecting (dammit). And really, who teams Anja with Andrew? Better to have put Dawn and Andrew together, then they could have both died... ;-)
Best thing about the season: the number of dodgy jokes in the finale. Number of fanboy jokes in the series. And I kind of liked Caleb, in a really sick way. Don't lets go into that.
Worst thing: they killed Jonathon way too early. Bah, humbug. And they really didn't know what to do with all the characters they had, and so quite a few of them felt ignored for most of the season. Giles, Xander, Dawn... they kind of went nowhere.
And the reason I'm looking all this up online is because I'm trying to work out (still) if Amanda (one of the potentials who looks amazingly like a guy at work's girlfriend but who has a much less irritating voice and an Australian accent) was killed in the finale or not. So far no luck. If anyone knows tell me OK? :-)
