Oct. 20th, 2003 09:21 amI really didn't enjoy soccer that much last night.
We won, 6-2.
I thought we all played OK. I just wish that a couple of players would stop making comments to the umpire/other team and just shut up and play.
It was frustrating the hell out of me: I don't consider that we're a bunch of players with lousy sportsmanship, but that was certainly how it was coming across to me last night. It wasn't everyone, hell it wasn't even most of us. I get the feeling that the other team's gone away with an impression of us as a pack of arseholes though.
Yes, there was a lot of push and shove. Yes, there was some truly interesting umpiring.
Deal with it. You're not obligated to push back, and if you do and the umpire decides to call it: suck it up and shut up about it.
If there is a major problem then talk to the ref at half time.
Some things I can understand asking the ref about at the time: the "indirect" kick which he then awarded a goal from (?!) and checking whether he's said "direct" or "indirect", or, for that matter, "blue" or "red" for the kick. Half the time no one on the other side of the court could hear what he was saying. It's things like "5 seconds, ref!" that really bug me though.
Anyway. We played well. We passed to each other. We created opportunities. We defended well. We were unlucky a couple of times, they were unlucky a couple of times. I really need to work on my corner shots. :-) ("Bend it like Beckham", my arse - more like "try not to hit the roof".)
At the end of the day, it's still Sunday Mixed division 5. And I want to come away feeling happy and friendly. *sigh*
Nice photos from the final btw too. Except we need to photoshop BundyChris in. ;-)

Date: 2003-10-19 08:15 pm (UTC)We shouldn't have to shout "5 seconds Ref", but especially not when we are 2 goals up ;)
I think we have become a more passionate team. As for Marcus, I really cannot blame him for getting pissed off. The amount of times I have seen him shoved off the ball and the ref to blow against him is ridiculous. I am not that biased am I?
Finally, it may be Sunday Mixed 5, but it's also an opportunity to release a bit of steam. I certainly use it as a stress relief and I am sure the other lads do as well. I am very sorry that this seems to be causing you stress. Maybe we should use the bye weekend for training/team issues and then a meal later? (Although sunday evening would be out.)
My favorite photo is the last one, where EVERYONE is beaming... you would never have guessed we lost!

Date: 2003-10-20 12:34 am (UTC)The passion is usually fine, it just seemed to go over the top last night, and also was being enhanced by the other team deciding to aggravate it by trying to wind UKChris up. There was some really nasty stuff going on towards the end there, which I'd rather we'd just ignored.
I agree Marcus seems to be getting the short end of the stick quite a bit: he gets more players having a go at him cos he's clearly a good player and he rarely gets the benefit of the doubt when people fall over. I think the yellow card was kind of a summation of that: although he admitted in the car on the way home that he had been targetting the guy, so it was maybe more deserved than previously thought.
The photos: I've got them, and they're ace. So far Mandy wants copies. I'm taking them tonight to show BundyChris and Kirsten. We need another team photo though, this time with BundyChris in it and me in new, blacker shorts. ;-)
