Happy New Year!

It's hot and sunny here, just the weather for chilling out. :-)

Resolutions: mostly Secret Bridesmaid's Business, actually.

I'll let you know how it goes. ;-)

BundyChris, Marcus and Kirsten came over and we made mexican while watching Monkey ("the nature of Monkey was irrepressible!"), Soultaker MST3K, and finally the Melbourne/Sydney fireworks on TV. And of course the millions of illegal fireworks going off all around the suburb. Glad to see the bust on the Hume last week put a dent in it. ;-) The smell of cordite was unbelievable - and I swear someone was letting a shottie off into the air at one point. What you get for living at the Beirut end of Lygon St, as a friend of mine put it.

Still - a Happy 2004 to everyone, and may we live in very uninteresting times. :-)

(Interesting - just noticed that the 4th edition of "The World's Most Dangerous Places" (published 2000) doesn't have Lebanon or Beirut in the index. Just goes to show - interesting times don't last forever. Thankfully.)

Had a quick check and Soultaker doesn't seem too bad for a late series episode. I do believe the quality dropped off as the core of really funny writers on the show shrank. Funny episodes like Deathstalker (a personal favourite) were still possible but they seemed to be less common.

Have seen Giant Spider Invasion and thought it rather weak. My all time favourite episode was The Cave Dwellers. I thought the show followed the classic ball curve by starting with the weak episodes of KTMA and steadily progressing to a peak in seasons 3/4/5 which gradually as many of the best writers moved on. It wasn't just a matter of losing them as characters but also losing their input into the riffing. I think later seasons also suffered because they were no longer in a position to use shorts. Many of those shorts are in my opinion the funniest sequences even done on MST3K. Who could ever watch the amazing Catching Trouble (which appeared with Teenage Caveman and not be affected in some very primal way?
