OK, I've spent far too much time thinking about this, so I'm announcing a competition. No prizes or possibly winners (I'm cheap, sorry).

All I want is an explanation as to why it is necessary to paint behind wall fittings in order to maintain quarantine.

The explanation can be scientific, it can be technobabble, it can be anything really. New age acceptable, daemons and fairies welcome.

Go for your lives.

If the wall fitting is not sealed, and the wall is rendered in a porous plaster, and the room gets humid, then stuff might get carried into the plaster. Um. And then the gnomes that harvest plaster mushrooms might get sick.

I think you're on the right track, only I think they're trying to keep bits of stuff that might come through the porous wall from getting out as well. And to protect against radiation. And, uhh... angels that might come through the wall and work divine miracles on your samples. That sort of thing.
