End of season
Oct. 6th, 2003 02:32 pmSo we played in the soccer grand final last night, against RugRats.
We'd played Rugrats a few times - the very first time we played them we won, then we drew a couple of times, won at least one other time and finally lost to them in the most recent game.
For the final both teams had 9 players (5 on the court at any one time) although they had a larger number of supporters (none of our family/friends came to see us!) We tend to change individually as people get tired - Rugrats change all four players at once, which is kind of funny to watch.
The game was very close, with them going 1-0 up in the first half before we equalised.
In the second half we teetered: we went 2-1 up, they equalised, we went 3-2 up - with a fantastic goal by Fraser - and for a minute there it seemed like we might be able to hold that score.
But no, they equalised. And then scored again, dammit.
We finally lost 5-2 (a final, very spectacular goal by their player who should have won best on ground) in the dying minutes of the game.
And then we all got presented with trophies that look remarkably like eggcups.
epideme has photos, which may or may not make it online.
Our aim for this season was, at the start, "to win more than we lose". I don't think any of us seriously expected to make the grand final, nor for it to be so close. And apart from one gratuitously stupid yellow card, it was a great game. Which quite seriously could have gone either way.
Next season we'll win it. New aim. :-)
(note to self: improve foot-eye co-ordination in order for this to happen...)

Date: 2003-10-06 07:06 pm (UTC)The trophy looks more like a shot glass to me, but it's actually larger and more impressive than I thought it would be.
Don't be too hard on yourself. You were in the right position and in space a number of times which game me the option to throw the ball straight at you and not always go to Marcus everytime. I remember you controlling the ball when I did throw it at you (always difficult, as I have to throw it quite fast to reach you) and keeping our momentum going. I didn't have a good game at all, unlike the previous game I didn't get a shot on target and gave the ball away a number of times.
You are right in that we exceeded our expectations by a long shot and basically had a fantastic season. I think we will probably go up a division, so the "win more than we lose" is still a good (and more to the point, realistic) target.
